It's been a long winding road for Steven Matz of the New York Mets who will make his Major League Debut today.

Matz was selected by the New York Mets in the 2nd round (72nd overall) of the 2009 Draft out of Ward Mellville High School in neighboring Long Island.

In 2010, Matz tore his ulnar collateral ligament while playing in instructional league for the Mets which resulted in Tommy John surgery. After a couple years of rehab Matz made his professional debut in 2012.

Matz has dominated hitters at every level since returning to the mound in 2012.  He's posted a 24-20 record with a 2.28 record in three and a half years in the minor leagues.

So it's safe to say this has been a long time coming for the lefty from Long Island.

While Matz hasn't made a single pitch for the Mets yet he's already embraced himself to Mets fans...not because he's a kid from Long Island but because he's gone through so much and fought back to get to this point.
