UALBANY Football Week 3 Preview, UAlbany vs. Morgan State

by Ryan McCarthy, BBM Staff Writer

The first conference game of UAlbany’s 2018 season was a forgettable one as the Great Danes fell behind early and lost to Rhode Island, 45-26. This week, the Great Danes will host another 0-2 team, Morgan State, in their home opener on Saturday night. The Bears dropped their most recent game, a 41-7 loss against Akron.

Both teams look to avoid starting their respective seasons at 0-3 and there are factors on both sides that will play a key part in Saturday’s game.

UAlbany Offense vs. Morgan State Defense: Untimely penalties and poor pass protection cost the Great Danes in last week's game. QB Vincent Testaverde had another solid effort with 228 passing yards and three touchdowns (two in the air, one on the ground), but was sacked three times. Last week saw a new wrinkle in the Great Danes’ pass offense with balanced ball distribution. TEs LJ Wesneski (3 receptions) and Lukas Repetti (1 reception) caught more passes  against Rhode Island than they did collectively in all of 2017. If the Great Danes are going to be successful in the air, though, they need to be aware of the Morgan State secondary. The Bears’ secondary has accounted for three interceptions already in 2018. One player to take note of is their outstanding LB Rico Kennedy; the junior leads the Bears’ defense in sacks (2.5) and tackles for loss (3.5) and is third on the team in total tackles (14).

Morgan State Offense vs. UAlbany Defense: This match-up presents two units that have had their share of struggles in this young season. The Bears' offense has only scored an average of 8.5 points per game. They are led by a two-man rushing attack comprised of Jordan Riggins and Joshua Chase. QB DeAndre Harris will be under center; he has been sacked five times already this season. Defensively, the Great Danes had a tough time against Rhode Island, conceding points on the Rams' first six possessions. They also conceded two fourth and long plays on different that prolonged scoring drives for the Rams. Nevertheless, this is a game where the Great Danes’ defense can bounce back from two disappointing games. Look for the front seven to have a better game this week. If they get early pressure on Harris, it could be a long afternoon again for the Bears' offense.

With their first of two consecutive home games at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium, the Great Danes hope to rebound from two road losses starting this Saturday night.
