UALBANY Football Week 4 Preview, St. Francis (PA) at UAlbany

by Ryan McCarthy, BBM Staff Writer

UAlbany’s football home opener delivered a wild affair between the Great Danes and Morgan State with the Great Danes eking out a 30-27 win over the Bears. This Saturday night, the Great Danes will face former Northeast Conference division foe, St. Francis (PA). In their all-time series as members of the NEC, the Great Danes reeled off fourteen consecutive victories over the Red Flash.

Each team enters this game with a 1-2 mark; St. Francis enters upset-minded, though. Last week, the Red Flash took Richmond, another CAA team, to the brink, only to lose to the Spiders in the final seconds. Will they do the same to the Great Danes?

UAlbany Offense vs. St. Francis Defense: The Great Danes’ offense has had problems with scoring and turnovers this season. Last week, they committed five turnovers, including four interceptions by QB Vincent Testaverde. Turnovers aside, the Great Danes scored at the most critical time. WR Dev Holmes received his second CAA Rookie of the Week honors after a performance that saw him finish with the second most single-game receiving yards. The Great Danes will also need to get their run game going so they can take the pressure off of Testaverde. They’ll be facing a Red Flash defense that doesn’t force many turnovers, but are adept at penetrating the line of scrimmage. Two players to watch for are LBs Da’Jon Lee and Sean Orsini. Lee is the team’s leader with 22 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, and is tied for the FCS lead nationally with five sacks. Orsini is not too far behind with 4.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks.

St. Francis Offense vs. UAlbany Defense: On offense, the Red Flash are led by QB Bear Fenimore; the former University of Houston transfer has accounted eight touchdowns (five passing, three rushing) in three games this season. His primary target has been WR Kamron Lewis, who has 21 receptions and two touchdowns. The offensive line has been effective in protecting Fenimore, surrendering only three sacks this season. They’ll face a Great Danes’ defense that was effective in disrupting the Morgan State's passing game last week. They sacked Bears’ QB DeAndre Harris five times and recovered three fumbles, including the one that sealed the game in the waning minutes. The defense will need another big performance from the front seven again if they’re going to want to even their record.

One of the crucial factors that will affect this week’s outcome is play on special teams. Last week, UAlbany had a stellar night: WR Donovan McDonald returned a punt for a touchdown and K Ethan Stark kicked three field goals, one which was a career-best 51-yarder. If the game gets tight, the Great Danes may need to rely on special teams again to get the win.
