30 Second Preview: Army West Point @ Union College, College Hockey, 10/6/18

Army West Point and Union College will kick off their season's tonight at Messa Rink in Schenectady, NY.

Both programs are looking to move past disappointing ends to last season.

For Union it was an upset in the ECAC Tournament at the hands of Princeton:

"How we finished, I'm not gonna lie...I don't want to use the word disappointing but I have to say of all losses since I've been here...those two hurt a lot going into the summer and then re-watching them about 52 times has really helped us prepare for this year," said head coach Rick Bennett about losing to Princeton last season.

While Army lost in an overtime thriller 1-0 to Air Force in Game 3 of Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals:

"We really want to move past that game obviously in the moment we learned from it," said junior defenseman Alex Wilkinson about the loss to Air Force.

Tonight's game should be an interesting one with two teams that are unfamiliar with each other coming from different leagues. Both teams can classified as playing "blue collar" hockey but have different strengths. Union has an experienced offense which hopes to score a lot of goals while Army has a solid defense. One common strength for both teams is solid goaltending. Union will most likely turn to junior Jake Kupsky in net tonight while Army will go with sophomore Jared Dempsey.

Deciding Factor: Union is physically a much bigger and deeper team then Army. The Dutchmen will try and impose their physical play on Army which could wear the Black Knights down. Army needs to not get frustrated and stay disciplined into not taking bad penalties giving the Dutchmen power play opportunities. Last season, Union ranked #3 in the ECAC with 35 power play goals converting on 22.9% of their opportunities which was second the ECAC.
