30 Second College Hockey Preview: University of Nebraska-Omaha @ Union College, 10/12/18 - 10/13/18

The University of Nebraska - Omaha Mavericks head to Electric City for two games with the Union College Dutchmen this weekend.

Last season, Omaha (a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference) finished 17-17-2 on the season.

Omaha is coming off a 6-1 dismantling of the University of Manitoba last Saturday.  The Mavericks were fueled by Teemu Pulkkinen, who had a hat trick, and Frederik Olofsson, who have four assists on the night. Eric Weninger (13 saves) and Matej Tomek (9 saves) split time in net with Tomak allowing the lone goal.

Union is coming off a 4-1 win over Army West Point. Cole Maier had two goals for the Dutchmen. While Jake Kupsky stopped 24 shots in net for the Dutchmen.

This week, the Dutchmen will need to slow down the combination of Pulkkinen and Olofsson.  The two combined for three goals in their last game. They'll also need to keep an eye on Zack Jordan, who is the Mavericks' top returning scorer from last season.

Omaha doesn't have a clear-cut starting goalie. Eric Weninger started 31 games for the Mavericks a year ago but had a pedestrian 3.36 GAA and .899 save percentage.  Matej Tomek is the 2015 3rd round pick (90th overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers had a solid season for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL last season (2.39 GAA, .907 save percentage). Both goalies will get at least one start in this series.

Union played a physical game last week against Army and frustrated them into taking bad penalties. Omaha will need to stay out of the penalty box and be more disciplined. In their last game, they were called six penalties and gave up their lone goal on 4-on-3 power play. Union won't be as forgiving on the power play they ranked #3 in the ECAC with 35 power play goals converting on 22.9% of their opportunities, which was second the ECAC.
